The words, Doc! What do they mean?!

As promised in the previous post I’m here today to teach you some words! Well, you’ll know most of the words already. But I’ll tell you what exactly I mean when I use them in the upcoming articles about X4’s mass traffic system.

Waypoint

Waypoints are usually defined in an object’s asset. The properties mass traffic cares about are their positions, tags, and links to other waypoints.

X4: Foundations Mass Traffic Part 1: The Big Picture

Your browser doesn't support embedded videos, but don't worry, you can download it and watch it with your favorite video player!

Mass Traffic is a system in recent X games that generates paths and makes vehicles fly along them. It mostly runs on a dedicated thread, minimising the performance impact on the game.

Your browser doesn't support embedded videos, but don't worry, you can download it and watch it with your favorite video player!

It’s mainly made for adding decorative, atmospheric civilian traffic around stations. The most important functional uses are transport drones for cargo transfers and welding drones for constructing, dismantling and repairing.

Hello there!

My name is Matthias. I’ve been a programmer at Egosoft since July 2007, working on the X series. Egosoft was one of about a dozen game developers I applied to while writing my diploma thesis, one of three who actually interviewed me, and the only one who accepted me as an intern.

My work was immediately all over the place, including major work in gameplay, UI and AI. I’m now a bit more focused but still happily a generalist.

When I say “AI” on this page I don’t mean what the game industry has been using the term for for decades, nor am I talking about Spielberg’s Haley Joel Osment vehicle (which is better than you remember - the ending is good!).

No, what the term has overwhelmingly been co-opted by is the latest glut of generative systems. Large Language Models like ChatGPT, Claude or (hurk) Grok. Image generators like Stable Diffusion, music generators like Suno, voice generators like ElevenLabs.

This page is for collecting a bunch of stuff I like or find interesting, and that I think others might as well.

Podcasts

Friends at the Table

My favourite actual play podcast, and probably my favourite podcast in general.

If you’re into Fantasy, Marielda is an excellent place to start.

If Sci-Fi is more your thing I recommend PARTIZAN.

Or you can check out their latest, currently ongoing series: Perpetua.

Der Game Dev Podcast

My favourite German game development podcast hosted by a former colleague.

Introduction

Hello there! Matthias here.

I’m not going to bloat this post with much redundant information. If you don’t know who I am but want to, check the About page.

I also have a page with my stance on “AI” - meaning the generative stochastic models that have taken over that term in the past few years.

There’s also a page of Links. Just a collection of stuff I think is neat.

For my first series of posts I’m going to talk about mass traffic, how it’s implemented in X4, what the system’s strengths and capabilities are, but also its current limitations. Stay tuned!
